Remastered of the Tomb Raider VI: The Angel of Darkness is the most troublesome release. Deviating from tradition, Lara is in a neo-noir mystery with otherworldly powers, mysterious machinations, and murder investigations. Aimed to combine RPG-style skill advancement, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered features Kurtis Trent as a playable character.
However, hurried development resulted in difficult controls and unfinished sections for The Angel of Darkness, which led to the cancellation of a supposed trilogy. Still, its goals are not to be stifled. Though performance fell short, the series’ mature subjects and tough concept signified a radical change. Even though they want a great expansion, the developers’ openness to try with gameplay and narrative is commendable.
The remake tries to fix some of the original’s shortcomings, but the fundamental gameplay problems still exist. These games’ strong focus on environmental storytelling is noteworthy; it transports players to each thrilling and terrifying location Lara visits. Every hillside, tomb, and hidden passageway seems to be a live puzzle just waiting to be figured out.
Then there is The Angel of Darkness, which aims to modernize the genre by integrating RPG-style progression, enhanced stealth, and a skill system allowing Lara to acquire strength over time. Though in practice, it breaks the flow and introduces harsh mechanics, the idea promotes immersion.
While Tomb Raider IV-VI remastered smooth some of the jagged edges, the primary flaws of the original remain.
