Spaceman is a simply beautiful film, and while it might not be perfect, it’ll find its audience over time.
Spaceman (2024) is a new sci-fi space film starring Adam Sandler from Netflix Studios. Spaceman (2024) is not in theaters and is only on Netflix right now. The film also didn’t have a lot of hype, and that might be due to Dune: Part Two being a massive success. Also, March will continue with massive films such as Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.
Netflix films are always up in the air as to how much hype they will get. Netflix seems to always decide to announce the release of their movies a couple of weeks or a month or so before they come out. Unlike a film in theaters, you would know the exact date up to a year in advance. The first trailer only came out about a month ago at this point. So Spaceman (2024) has a lot of things working against it. But I do feel like, over time, this film will gain a decent audience, maybe even a cult audience.
So we have Adam Sandler playing Jakub Prochazka, who is in a spaceship for a year at a time. Right now, he is in the middle of a year-long trip. He deals with missing home and missing his wife who is played by Carey Mulligan. I like Spaceman (2024) a lot, so I don’t want to give out too many spoilers, so I’ll be more vague with the plot. But with Jakub being in space and not communicating with anyone besides a basic FaceTime thing with the crew, he begins to get pretty depressed and anxious.
Then, a giant spider shows up. But it’s not an enemy; it’s a curious alien. It’s looking to figure out how humans work. Paul Dano voices it, and his performance is great. The spider can relive Jakub’s memories alongside him. So, by doing that, he learns more about who he is and how human life is. He also wants to figure out what’s happening to Jakub’s character currently.
Spaceman (2024) isn’t super long, and it fits into the whole stranded type of film. Most of the film is about the spaceship that Adam Sandler is on. We spend some time on earth with his wife and the crew that he can communicate with, but not a ton.
I would say it’s 70% screen time on the ship. Now, a lot of people seem to have their issues with Adam Sandler, but I think he squashed the fraud actor allegations with Uncut Gems. He had a serious role in that film, and he did phenomenally. It wasn’t his first serious film to get mainstream attention, but it’s the latest. I do think his making Spaceman (2024) is due in part to his feeling like he wants to do more serious projects.
Spaceman (2024) is about a series as it gets, and it’s as heartbreaking as it gets. I think, debatably, this is his most serious role to date. He is so vulnerable in a lot of scenes, and it’s kind of crazy to see. We are so used to him doing the stupidest, silliest stuff in his films, but he throws a curveball at you with Spaceman (2024).
Adam Sandler is so good in Spaceman (2024), and his emotions are so strong. His betrayal of loneliness, a broken heart, and general depression were so real. When he relives his memories of how his life went wrong with his wife, it feels so real. The way the scenes are written, and the way the dialogues are done don’t come off as corny at all. In some films, relationships don’t always come off as realistic. Some of that might also be where this is based on a book.
One thing I need to mention is how great the music is. I don’t think Spaceman (2024) would’ve been as great as it was if it weren’t for the music. The music elevates scenes and makes the emotions intensely strong. And in sci-fi films, music is always a key part. It helps set the stage and tone of the atmosphere in the world. Think of Star Wars, Blade Runner, Terminator, and Interstellar; all those have memorable soundtracks. And Spaceman (2024) has that. It has heart-wrenching songs that can even stand on their own. The songs perfectly represent what I’m seeing on the screen.
The highs in Spaceman (2024) were very high. There were times in the film when I was comparing scenes to my life. It genuinely touched me. I felt high relatability for anyone who has been in a complicated relationship or has felt a general sense of isolation or loneliness. I think that’s when film excels in its art. It makes you feel something and sometimes helps you discover something about yourself. In the film, we see a massive character arc unfold in front of us in a very touching realization.
A lot of people don’t like this film, and the ratings are not good. It just really baffles me. Spaceman (2024) was so touching and so beautiful. I have a hard time seeing why people didn’t like it. Of course, it’s not perfect. For example, I feel the ending could’ve been slightly better, and the pacing isn’t great either. Sometimes, we cut back on what’s happening on Earth, and I wish we were still in space with Adam Sandler. That is crazy, just by itself.
Yeah, the films are a little weird, but it’s a space sci-fi film, and those are always going to be a little strange. I think a lot of people just can’t stand Adam Sandler, regardless if he’s in a comedy or a serious film. Maybe some people thought this was a comedy for some reason. Or maybe just the whole concept of him talking to this giant spider was strange as well. It is a strange concept, but it’s done pretty well. It doesn’t seem far off as he is deep in space.
But it is also a heavy film. You need to know that it’s going to deal with some pretty heavy topics and be pretty emotional. It’s aiming for the stars as far as the message goes, and sometimes a lot of people feel like that’s a plateau that is near impossible to reach.
Maybe it didn’t reach the plateau that it was aiming for, but I feel like it’s still pretty damn close. It made me feel a lot of emotions and revisit memories of my own like Jakub did. I went back and listened to some of the music from the film, and I’m still enjoying it.
The film might be overshadowed by Dune: Part Two being such a massive film at the moment. But I hope that it might show up on someone’s Netflix recommendation, and they can watch it and hopefully have a great experience from it. We might see one of those posts on TikTok where someone is talking about the film, and it starts to garner an audience. We need more creative films like this. I think a general moviegoer can enjoy it if they don’t have a bias against Adam Sandler or space sci-fi films.
