Mr. McMahon (2024) had people thinking it was all about the new McMahon scandals and news. But it was just another Netflix documentary series.
Mr. McMahon (2024) was extremely hyped up before it was recently released on Netflix. A lot of that is due, in part, to him leaving WWE completely recently due to recent allegations. The documentary was originally filmed two years ago and must’ve been sitting in the editing room for a while. They must have scrapped many parts of this mini-series and probably changed the ending due to the new allegations.
It’s hard to say what the original intent was with Mr. McMahon (2024). They could’ve leaned toward telling a story about Vince McMahon, minus all of the allegations that have been put on him throughout his whole career. It seems that the last episode was filmed this year, and every other episode was filmed years ago. So, a lot of time and money was needed to change the story up a little bit and the angle they had possibly.
Vince McMahon offered to buy the documentary so it would not air. He made an interesting statement on X about how the documentary is very one-sided and warned viewers to keep this in mind before watching.
With all this insane controversy surrounding it, you would think Mr. McMahon (2024) would be a groundbreaking documentary. It would have had new evidence and new angles on Vince McMahon’s career. It does shed some new light on Vince McMahon’s life but doesn’t do anything groundbreaking for a casual wrestling audience.
Vince McMahon doesn’t talk much about his life, and the wrestling industry is very hush-hush. We don’t hear a lot about what happens behind closed doors. We hear more now than what we heard back in the day in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Then, it was about keeping the audience believing what they were saying could be real. But of course, times change, and so do people.
We all know about WWE, one of the biggest companies in the world. We all know about the wrestlers who have come from there, like the Rock and John Cena, but we don’t know a ton about how Vince McMahon crafted WWE into what it is today. Since there is not a lot of information on his life, I found Mr. McMahon (2024) so interesting. I am a pretty big wrestling fan, and I have been for most of my life.
It is difficult to recommend this to people who have no interest in wrestling at all. Documentary fans might enjoy it, but it is hard to say. While Mr. McMahon (2024) is well-made and very entertaining, many people have strong opinions about the WWE. Where it is rehearsed, people seem to disregard it as fake and not hard to do. I will say that Mr. McMahon (2024) is entertaining for wrestling fans and casuals.
But for someone who knows nothing about wrestling, it’s hard to say if they would enjoy this unless they are a fan of this documentary series style. The creators of Mr. McMahon (2024) were involved in making the Tiger King documentary series on Netflix, so I guess if you like that, you might like it as well. It’s not as groundbreaking or a cultural phenomenon as Tiger King, but it’s still entertaining.
It is a shame as well because there is so much stuff that has come out about Vince McMahon recently that they could’ve put into Mr. McMahon (2024). That might’ve been why they were sitting on the project for so long. They felt like they needed to get it out right when these allegations came up. But it’s not doing numbers for a documentary series on Netflix.
What they could’ve done was add another episode that went over more of the recent allegations. The final episode in the documentary series covers some of the allegations but doesn’t spend a ton of time on them. And, of course, Vince McMahon isn’t interviewed to talk about these allegations in Mr. McMahon (2024).
They seem to get a lot of good interviews for Mr. McMahon (2024). They got a lot of high-profile people in it as well. But what was interesting was the people who had in the past had allegations towards Vince McMan. For example, in the 80s, there was a referee who claimed to be sexually harassed by Vince McMahon. She claimed that he forced himself upon her and promised to give her a lot more money in return for sexual favors.
After she left, she sued him, and he eventually paid out years later. With the new allegations, they didn’t interview any of the people involved with those. It would’ve been interesting if they were to land these interviews, but I understand it might be hard with these being brand new. You also might have lawyers telling them not to speak publicly about the allegations just yet.
Maybe they could do part two once everything is said and done. Vince McMahon has gone to court and settled whatever issues there are right now with the allegations. It’s hard to say if they would make a whole series about that, but you never know with someone who has had allegations spread for 40+ years.
With that being said, it is not all about the allegations and his bad side in the documentary. We see how Vince McMahon made insane, impractical business decisions. But all these paid off, as WWE became one of the biggest companies in the world. The way he got to this point was interesting. He was always doing what was right for business and didn’t necessarily make the morally right decision.
However, his cutthroat business style led WWE to become what it is today. He also got away with some horrendous acts beyond his sexual allegations. The way he treated a lot of wrestlers and the way he did business was very impractical, and the documentary did a good job of showing this. I would say he is the American dream, but the way it is done is not held to the standards of many people in America.
Mr. McMahon (2024) does not seem to know if it wants to be a straight-up hit piece about Vince McMahon or just a history of the company. I think that is its downfall. It’s a mixed bag, and it’s hard to tell what the true intentions are.
Sometimes, they have interviews with people who seem to support Vince McMahon as a person and then those who do not. However, some of the terrible things he has done could make anyone not like him. As far as I know, this documentary isn’t making a giant splash like it could have.
It’s hard to say what was going on with the story as it took so many years to make. I wish they could’ve waited a little bit longer and had a more definitive stance on the current allegation Vince McMahon was facing. These allegations led Vince McMahon to resign from WWE altogether and even taken off WWE video games.
Every story needs its end, and this is the end of Vince McMahon’s career indefinitely. Here, in a year or two, we will have more news about all these allegations, so the end could be more definitive for Mr. McMahon (2024) if they had waited another year or so. They could plan for part two to be the rest of his story, which is still to be told.
