Drive-Away Dolls is the new Ethan Coen film. It’s raunchy and funny, but also short and sweet. It’s a fun comedy that might become a cult classic.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024) isn’t for everyone. It has some pretty perverted humor that not everyone will like. But that’s kind of the charm of the movie. It has that in-your-face shock humor but is also a decent romantic road trip flick. It seems to be a callback to those raunchy 70s and 90s sexual comedy films.
Unfortunately, a lot of people will not watch Drive-Away Dolls (2024) or will give it a bad rating due to it being about lesbians. Just like other media, like The Last Of Us Part II, a lot of people get upset just at that fact alone. This is sad because if you like these kinds of movies you are missing out on a fun ride.
I won’t go into the plot very much, as half the fun is seeing what happens next. But it is a road-trip film between two lesbian friends. Along the way, they get wrapped up in a criminal escapade and are being tracked down.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024) doesn’t take itself very seriously, which is nice. It is an over-the-top comedy at the end of the day, so it can’t take itself that seriously anyway. But it does excel at written dialogue from the screenplay. It has that Quentin Tarantino feel to it. You have these very animated, unique, and over-the-top characters. They are so unique that she will be thinking about them a little bit after the movie. It seems that everyone will have their favorite character from this film as well.
With that being said, the casting is fantastic as well. Drive-Away Dolls (2024) has a great lineup of actors and actresses in the movie. You have Margaret Qualley as Jamie, whom I and other gamers will know best from Death Stranding. You have Pedro Pascal as Santos, Matt Damon as Senator Channel, Coleman Domingo as Chief, and Beanie Feldstein as Sukie. Some of these actors make guest appearances in the film, but their performances are still awesome. Even Miley Cyrus shows up and has a guest performance.
It seems that all these actors had a blast filming Drive-Away Dolls (2024), which is great because that translates to the viewer as well. It reminds me of Lisa Frankenstein in that regard. This is more of a fun film than a technically good one. The film is so short that you don’t have these insane character arcs or anything.
You might be able to predict a couple of things in the film before they happen, but when you go into this film within 2 to 3 minutes, you’re going to know what kind of film you’re in for. Drive-Away Dolls (2024) sets the tone strongly with an opening-in-your-face type scene. I don’t want to give it away because it is pretty funny, but I will say that this film has a strong intro that sets the tone for the rest of the film. So once you prepare yourself for it being that kind of goofy movie, then you’ll enjoy it.
Don’t expect this to be as good as The Big Lebowski or anything like that. But Drive-Away Dolls (2024) is still a fun movie. You might not remember it for the rest of your life or anything, but it’s still really funny, and I do think it will be re-watchable. It might also become a cult classic, especially with lesbian films being a smaller underground market right now.
I mean, Drive-Away Dolls (2024) is an hour and 24 minutes. It’s so short and easy to watch. How many films nowadays can be that short and still have a decent impact? Every movie nowadays is 2 1/2 hours plus, it seems. Especially some comedies that, for some reason, need to be two hours long. It knows what it needs to be and what it needs to do. It gets in and out of your hair very quickly.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024) doesn’t drag at all, which is another great thing. There’s no filler, and the film is moving at a super fast rate. Of course, Drive-Away Dolls (2024) has its moments to breathe as well, but it is a fast-paced film. The film knows when it needs to be serious and when it needs to be funny. It’s funny I would say, 90% of the time, but it has its serious moments when it feels like it needs some.
It is a fun road trip film. And in Drive-Away Dolls (2024), they’re going further south, going through some southern states. So there are a lot of fun interactions they have with some interesting people along the way. You get a good sense of American culture in this film in the time that it’s based in as well.
Back to the actors and actresses. All the performances are fun and great. Every single character is so unique and so hilarious. It seems that actors and actresses took their roles very seriously and created these hilarious caricatures of people. A lot of the actors in this film are pretty popular at the moment, like Pedro Pascal. I will say he’s not in the movie very long, but watching him scream for the limited time he has is pretty funny.
The same goes for Matt Damon. He is barely in Drive-Away Dolls (2024), but when he is, it’s very funny as well. So when you see that these actors are in this movie, don’t expect them to be in it for very long. We have our main characters, and most of the film is spent with them.
It’s almost a given, but with all the Coen films, the music is always awesome. There is always a great job of selecting songs that feel perfect for the scene that they are in. The film has these interesting transitions that are trippy and groovy, like a 70s or 60s hippie film. The music played in these scenes is fantastic.
Of course, if you haven’t drawn this conclusion already, the film has a lot of nude and sex scenes. So keep that in mind when watching the film, if that’s not your cup of tea. This film is raunchy but in a good way. Not in the high school boys “I get to see hot girls naked” type way, but in a funny way. And ultimately, it has a decent romance in it as well between the main characters. Both are opposites as people, and their chemistry together is very unique and interesting.
It has a pretty fun ending as well, leaving a smile on my face. The way it ties together. All of its loose ends are tied up very well, and I feel like they could’ve made the film longer if they wanted. I doubt a second will be made, but I think it would be pretty fun to see these characters again in some way, shape, or form.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024) is crazy and wild, but at the end of the day, it’s fun, and sometimes that’s all you need for an hour and a half for a movie.
