An untouched edition of Super Mario Bros. has sold for $2 million, breaking the previous record established by a video game auction just last month when a buyer paid $1.56 million for an immaculate duplicate of Super Mario 64.
According to a picture posted by Rally, the business that sold the game, the copy received a Wata Scale rating of 9.8 A+, indicating that it was in “exceptional” condition. The old record was established only a month ago. An noteworthy aspect of this transaction is that it did not include an auction. A “alternative asset investment” platform, Rally positions itself instead.
“Initial offers,” in which consumers can acquire shares in a tangible collectable, are conducted by the company, according to The New York Times. All of Rally’s stakeholders vote on a collector’s bid when it comes time to buy anything from the firm. Super Mario Bros. was recently sold, and Rally purchased it in April 2020 for roughly $140,000. Investors turned down a $300,000 bid for the game in the same year. As many as a fourth of people having a stake in the valuable object refused to accept the offer, even if it came with a $2 million price tag. A boxed version of The Legend of Zelda sold at auction for $870,000 just days before the previous record was established. A new record is sure to be established before long, as the market shows no signs of slowing down and there are only a limited number of pristine video games in circulation.
The reasons why some people wanted to hold on to their copies for a while are presumably clear to anybody who has been watching the market.
