Worms Rumble is the first real-time Worms game ever. Team 17 Digital has announced a new game in the Worms series. Worms Rumble is an action shooter arena based on 32 players. Their description of the game is both old and new Worms. Get ready in Last Worm Standing or Deathmatch modes, where you are only ever a Holy Hand Grenade away from death.
The second part, as any worms player can tell, is extremely familiar. Worms WMD, the last game in the series, was a more conventional turn-based artillery game released in 2016. The trailer highlights multiplayer shooting in a side-scrolling 2.5D environment, with bullets wildly spraying everywhere, lots of wall-jumping, and chaotic battlefields. And little pink smirking earthworms that could only have been invented at the true height of the “edgy” ’90s.
Judging by the tags and Steam description, Last Worm Standing is some kind of battle royale. Worms Rumble is scheduled to be released in 2020. A prominent part of Worms since the series’ beginnings, early commenters were quick to point out that the trailer doesn’t feature destructible terrain.
Team 17 quickly commented on YouTube, suggesting that what can be destroyed varies from map to map. Every level in the game has some destructible terrain. Team 17 also says to expect community collaborations, seasonal events, and daily challenges that will grant players additional XP. This XP can be used, along with in-game currency, to unlock rewards, including emotes, accessories, weapon skins, and outfits.
Later this year, Worms Rumble will be coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Team 17 said that they are focusing solely on those platforms for now, and cross-play will be supported, too. Additionally, those curious to see how Worms Rumble’s new real-time action plays out will be able to sign up for the PC beta on Steam, which gets underway on July 15th.
