Vicarious Visions, established in 1991, has merged with and became a subsidiary of Blizzard now regarded as Blizzard Albany.
Vicarious Visions, well known for the development of Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Skylanders has merged with Blizzard as a subsidiary. The developer for much of its life has been partnered with Activision but has now taken a chance and meandered over to the Blizzard portion of the company.
This undoubtedly came across following the companies work on Diablo II: Resurrected. This will adjust what Vicarious Visions will be working on and ultimately means the company will not be a lead developer on any project anymore. While this is not exactly untrodden territory for the company (With them having worked on the PC version of Destiny 2) it does mean that projects such as Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 + 2 are by the wayside.
The official twitter of Vicarious Visions stated this on twitter:
This in some sort of macabre way brings about the end of a company with a history spanning 30 years. Their most recent work is Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 + 2 but many more will remember Vicarious Visions as the company behind the toy to game project Skylanders that was a very successful IP throughout much of the 2010’s.
The comments section of the tweet seen above are riddled with fans somewhat disappointed in the company becoming simply a subsidiary. However, it is a good thing that the development team remains unscathed and that no employees were ‘sacrificed’ in a sense for this deal to go through.
Vicarious Visions (Now Blizzard Albany) has a vast array of talented developers and I along with many others are excited to see what this new Blizzard subsidiary will work on, especially following Microsoft’s colossal purchase of Activision-Blizzard earlier this year.
