Being one of the biggest game award nights, studios and players alike have been waiting with bated breath to find out who will win Game of the Year.
The Game of the Year award in The Game Awards is one of the biggest awards in gaming, with their annual livestreams racking up countless views. This year’s nominations showed both the variety and quality of what was available for gamers, from new Nintendo exclusives to an RPG that took the world by storm and even a couple of horrors that demonstrated a huge return to form for their respective series. It is safe to say the voters had their work cut out for them when it came to picking the best game of this year.
This year’s nominations have certainly been varied, and many are happy with the final lineup in most categories. It should be noted there were many unhappy with some of the games missing that seemed to be the main snubs of the year. Two of the biggest ones were the Dead Space Remake, which was not even getting a look into the Game of the Year category despite fantastic sales, and one of the most atmospheric narratives that has been recently seen in the horror genre. Another snub was Final Fantasy XVI, which was not only not seen on the game of the year list but also missing from many other categories that it would have been excellently suited for.
Going into the final polls, it seemed that the two front runners for the Game of the Year award were Alan Wake 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Both games have been loved by seemingly everyone who played them. While Baldur’s Gate seems to have appealed to the larger fanbase, the sheer artistry in Alan Wake 2’s long-awaited return can not be denied.
With all of that being said, the winner of The Game Awards Game of the Year – Baldur’s Gate 3
This was certainly a well-deserved win, and the team at Larian Studios should be proud of the strides they have made, not only as a developer but also to the gaming scene as a whole. Dressed in a wonderful suit of armor, the team thanked all those involved in the creation of the game, including those whom they lost along the way. Baldur’s Gate 3 was their “Covid game”, built in a time of extreme stress, yet so much joy came from it. Congratulations, Larian Studios, the win is well deserved.
