The Callisto Protocol, which is the spiritual successor of Dead Space, was not good enough to keep Glen Schofield in the crew.
Dead Space is one of the marvels of the sci-fi horror genre. Released back in 2009, the game capsulated the terror that could happen in space and made a new layer of horror games into the bunch. The game itself was critically acclaimed and had a successful remake too. The creator of the game, Glen Schofield is credited with lots of different titles since 1991, but Dead Space is one of the best games he’s known for.
Dead Space is, well, not dead, however, Glen Schofield helped Striking Distance Studios and made them come up with a new space-themed sci-fi horror game called The Callisto Protocol. The title did not have much for advertising, in fact, most people might have heard about it now. This is further proven by the fact that it had barely any sales and the lack of polish in The Callisto Protocol made people completely skip the game entirely.
Now that the developers, Striking Distance Studios, are working properly on the title to fix it, the reviews have turned from negative to mostly positive, turning the overall rating from mostly negative to mixed. Although it seems like a good change of pace, Striking Distance Studios had to lay off 32 of their workers before the first-ever DLC was published, making the situation more blatant with low sales figures and miscommunication between production teams.
After a lot of departures happened in Striking Distance Studios, the main director of The Callisto Protocol, Glen Schofield also left the company with the reasoning of “pursuing new opportunities”. To be honest, Schofield does not have to stick with one theme by the looks of it. From Barbie to Gex, Call of Duty to Legacy of Kain, he has some involvement in games one way or another, so he is surely able to fit into another gaming studio easily.
Steve Papoutsis, who also has a history with the Dead Space franchise with the second and third titles, will be taking the lead from Schofield. It is still lost in limbo if Striking Distance Studios will be able to survive after losing many people and the director of The Callisto Protocol Project.
