Will The Expanse be the game Telltale needs to get back on the map?
After a very controversial close of the company and four long years of waiting, Telltale Games have finally dropped the trailer for their newest game, The Expanse. The Expanse: A Telltale Series will follow Carmina Drummer in a prequel to the show of the same name. The trailer shows the continued improvement of the graphics, which had already been a step up from previous games in The Walking Dead: The Final Season.
Fans of the show will be excited to see Cara Gee reprising her role as Carmina Drummer from The Expanse TV show, although the studio have stated they plan to make the game in a way that allows anyone to enjoy it whether you have watched the Amazon Prime series or not. The popularity of the show will mean most who play the game will have an idea of what is happening, but even those who haven’t seen it will be able to enjoy surviving a mutiny, battling pirates, and the zero-g environments. Like previous Telltale adventures The Expanse will force the player to make difficult, sometimes life and death, decisions.
After the collapse of Telltale a few years ago during the release of the final season of The Walking Dead, it seems like a risky move for Telltale to try for another episodic release schedule. Many fans who had gone for the season pass of the game were worried The Walking Dead might not be finished and their money would be wasted. Luckily Skybound Games came along to finish the job, but the uncertainty was not appreciated by the fans. Telltale appears to have learned from their mistakes this time, however, with a guarantee that after the launch on 27th July, the new episodes will come out every two weeks.
Despite this, there will not be an option to buy the episodes individually, only the game as a whole. While this may make no difference to those who normally buy the season pass, it does not allow for the player to try the first episode before committing to the whole game.
Although mistakes have been made in Telltale’s past many are excited for the new game that will take place in The Expanse universe. The trailer looks dynamic with excellent character designs as well as new ways to navigate the game in the low-gravity environments that have been developed.
