Super Mario Bros Wonder Feature inspired by the classic SNES Game.
Takashi Tezuka, the producer of Super Mario Bros. Wonder revealed that the game’s development team had originally planned for the iconic character Yoshi, to have a unique skill of attack; they originally planned for Yoshi to throw eggs.
This benched ability idea had seemed to come from the classic SNES game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, which would have allowed Yoshis on the Island to change enemies into eggs and throw them like weapons to clear stages.
Although Yoshi’s first appearance in the 1990s took place in Super Mario World, his place and role in the world were expanded on. Throughout the years on Yoshi Island, with Mario and Luigi in their infant stages, the SNES game acted as a prequel, having tasked an island of Yoshis with aiding Mario and Luigi in getting back to their parents. This gave players new moves to work with such as eating enemies and changing them into eggs.
Although this egg-throwing feature has shown up in other Nintendo games over the years, it did not make an appearance in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Granted, this almost took a different turn.
According to the Producer of Super Mario Bros, he truly believes that Yoshi’s egg throwing would have been an improvement to the gameplay – “As for Yoshi’s actions, I thought it would be better if he could throw eggs, so we tried to create a prototype and test it” Tezuka said. The Producer noted however, that the egg ability prototype proved difficult to use. Ultimately, this meant that the egg-throwing ability was benched.
Overall, the egg ability never made the cut, but the final version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder never lost steam in gaining popularity for Nintendo, and Yoshi still ended up being an iconic character. Though it would have been interesting to see what kind of changes this ability could have done for Yoshi, either way, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is still a very popular game since its release in October.
