The End of an Era: Farewell PiranhaBytes.
Disheartening news for fans of Gothic: PiranhaBytes, the German developer behind the third-person shooter Elex and classic RPG Gothic, has reportedly closed its doors. A studio insider informed the Polish games website, CD-Action, that PiranhaBytes ceased operations at the end of June.
This news comes after the studio acknowledged facing difficulties earlier this year on their social media channels. They expressed their determination to persevere and find a suitable partner, but it seems those efforts were unsuccessful.
While PiranhaBytes’ official channels haven’t confirmed the closure, it appears likely. Their social media has been quiet since the initial announcement, the official website is empty, and Embracer Group, the studio’s parent company, has a history of studio closures.
It is never a good feeling to hear about the shutting down of a video game studio. PiranhaBytes has been in the industry for over 2 decades and it is a true shame to see such a veteran studio fade into nothingness. Both the Risen and Elex series garnered a dedicated fanbase for their unique blend of action, exploration, and gothic atmosphere.
Fortunately, there is still a glimmer of hope for the displaced developers. Alkimia Interactive, another Embracer Group studio, is currently working on a remake of the first Gothic game. Perhaps some PiranhaBytes employees can find new homes within Alkimia, potentially carrying forward some of that Gothic RPG expertise.
The future of the Risen and Elex series remains uncertain. Hopefully, Embracer Group will provide more information regarding the fate of these beloved franchises in the coming days.
