For 20 years, Steam has been in our lives, and it has been providing one of the best game services that exists.
Steam is now officially 20 years old and Valve is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a big event, featuring memory down the lanes, discounts, and of course, memes. Steam’s overall purpose was to deliver content updates to main Valve games back in 2003, however, the reason was changed once Valve realized the potential of developers being able to share their games and connect with their player base directly. The first game ever uploaded to Steam was Counter-Strike: Source, showcasing the power of Source Engine on a classic title.
The presentation of the 20th anniversary of Steam turned out to be rather intriguing because not only did they talk about their past and showcase the best-selling game for each year, but they also talked about their advancements, achievements, and accomplishments in each segment, giving trivia and important little information.
One of the best parts of this presentation is the showcase of memes, representing each year properly. It was not necessary at all, but seeing official Valve characters being portrayed as popular memes for each year is a nice touch. There are also some free goodies you can grab from the Points Shop too, so do not miss out on them.
To sum up, from 2003 to 2023, there were a lot of additions to both the software and hardware side of Steam. 2004 saw the first addition to the Store, 2008 saw the emergence of Steamworks and Steam Cloud, and then in the upcoming years, MacOS and Linux support was added, making it widely available to everyone. Other important additions to Valve’s popular game service were Family Share in 2013, the first hardware in 2015 with Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Link, Remote Play Together in 2019, and in 2022, Valve launched the Steam Deck.
There are a lot of expectations from Valve now, they have gathered quite a big follower in hardware after their successful launch of Steam Deck. There are even speculations that Valve might be even working on a new, powerful Steam Machine to let people access VR in an easier and more affordable way.
