We might see Sony’s new PlayStation Handheld rather soon.
Sony has been desperate for a handheld launch ever since they stopped making games for PS Vita in 2021. However, things have been looking somewhat positive for an upcoming PlayStation Handheld after Sony’s latest PS Portal System Software Update Version 4.0.0. Even though this project is still very far away, the idea of a new Sony handheld is, of course, quite fascinating.
This week, Digital Foundry dived into this matter in their weekly podcast and said the following: “And started making the rounds here, alluding to a recent Bloomberg piece that was the first mention of a new PlayStation handheld and stated that it was still in the early phases of development.”
We have two very reputable sources reporting that this project exists. Although this does not guarantee that it will be completed, it is interesting that Sony is attempting to re-enter the handheld market. According to Bloomberg, the PlayStation Handheld is expected to broaden Sony’s reach and compete with Nintendo for the portable market. Nintendo is the company to look up to, given its success with handheld devices.
If this new Sony device can play PS5 games natively, it will be a strong contender even with the present game library. Now, both Bloomberg and Digital Foundry have stated that it will be years before we see the PSP2, if that is what it is called, and that it would most likely compete with the Switch 2.
Let’s remember that Xbox’s Phil Spencer indicated that a handheld gaming device is in the works, though it will be years away. So, while we are currently caught up in the present console conflicts, it appears like the next conflict is already on the horizon. Seriously, let’s not make fun of each other over which handheld we choose when these come out.
