Sony reveals their plans for the coming years and they are finally promising some big hit games.
It looks like PlayStation has some pretty cool stuff on the horizon, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. Sony’s been making some big moves lately—talking about dropping more blockbuster games, and giving the PSN review system a much-needed upgrade. Sony has made it clear that it’s aiming to deliver more blockbuster games through PlayStation Studios.
To achieve this, Sony Interactive Entertainment is honing its development processes and adjusting release schedules. Despite the commercial success of many titles, PlayStation Studios has faced challenges in maintaining profit margins. In response, Sony is restructuring its PlayStation division, which involves cutting over 900 jobs and introducing a new management team led by joint CEOs Herman Holst and Hideaki Nishino.
During a recent investor’s call for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024, the company emphasized that the studio business group is focusing on improving development schedule management and streamlining projects to ensure a steady flow of hit games. This is their statement:
“The studio business group is strengthening its development schedule management and optimizing development projects to consistently and continuously release hit titles.” – Sony
Meanwhile, Sony’s platform business group is working on increasing the number of active PlayStation users and enhancing user engagement. Their top priority is to build a stable financial foundation. Although no major first-party blockbusters have been released this year, Sony has rolled out several console exclusives.
Looking ahead to fall 2024, three smaller first-party games are in the pipeline: Concord, Astrobot, and Lego Horizon Adventures. The latter half of the PS5’s life cycle, particularly 2025 and beyond, looks promising, with studios having more time to develop their games and the release of the PS5 Pro potentially bringing more power to upcoming titles. There has been a recent drought of first-party exclusives, so there is a lot to look forward to as a PS5 owner.
