Sonic The Hedgehog 2 surpasses the previous record for the greatest start in a film adaptation of a video game ever.
SEGA CORPORATION (headquarters in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Chairman and CEO: Yukio Sugino) announces that the film “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” co-produced by Paramount Pictures Corporation and SEGA of America Inc., has grossed $331.64 million worldwide, beating the previous film’s record of $319.71 million.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie series is based on SEGA’s renowned video game franchise and follows the narrative of the world’s fastest hedgehog as he adapts to life on Earth.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released on April 8 in 4,234 theaters throughout the United States and worldwide on March 31. In its first three days of release (April 8-10), the picture earned $72.1 million in the United States. It also smashed the $58.01 million mark established by its predecessor within the first three days of its US release. More than 47 nations, including France, the UK, and Australia, have seen success since its inception, and it has also performed well in the countries of Mexico and Brazil.
Only in the United States did the picture exceed the $148.97 million it made in its first week. It also set a new video game adaptation record with $162.74 million. For a total of $331,64,000,000, it raised more money outside the United States than its predecessor, which raised $168.9 million.
