We finally get a look at Smite 2, Hi-Rez Games’ sequel to it’s third-person MOBA.
Smite is one of the biggest MOBAs ever and has been around for quite some time but due to its age, the game has been in desperate need of an update and that’s exactly what we got. Hi-Rez Studios has recently revealed Smite 2, the sequel to the third person action MOBA, Smite. If that wasn’t enough good news, the game will also be built using Unreal Engine 5. Fans have been dying to know more about the sequel and the studio has gladly given us interesting details about the upcoming MOBA sequel.
For those of you who don’t know about Smite 2’s predecessor, Smite, you play as one of the many gods and other mythological beings. You participate in various different types of team-based battles. Many of the beings you can play as come from real world pantheons and cultural folklore, ranging from classical Greek Mythology to even Japanese Yokai and Shinigami. Depending on which god you choose to play as, you will be given different roles, these can range from ranged, melee or support.
In the original Smite game, there are around 129 playable gods. The game is technically a free-to-play title, however, players are required to use in-game currencies to unlock new gods to play as. You can earn both of the game’s in-game currencies, “Favor” and “Gems”, via participation in normal gameplay or through micro transactions on storefronts such as Steam or the PlayStation store.
Fans of the mythological MOBA will be glad to know that now they have a chance to play their favorite MOBA but now more sleek and modernized in the form of Smite 2. The sequel will be built in Unreal Engine 5 and as of writing, will have a closed alpha testing period starting in Spring of 2024. If you’re interested in signing up for the closed alpha, you will be happy to know that Hi-Rez has encouraged players to sign-up via email requesting an access code as well as the platform where they would prefer to play the game.
As stated earlier, the original Smite has been around for quite some time and was initially built using Unreal Engine 3, a lot of things have changed since then and due to limitations of the older engine, a new rebuild of the game was necessary. Currently, Smite 2 is in its alpha state and has a limited roster of gods to choose from during testing.
If you’re worried, you won’t be able to play with friends on other platforms during alpha testing, but have no worries as Hi-Rez has confirmed that Smite 2 will have cross-play functionality across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, as well as Steam Deck, along with cross-progression depending on the partner’s approval. Unfortunately, most skins from the first Smite won’t be available in the alpha build.
