Skyblivion is a project by a group of volunteer modders to remake Oblivion in Skyrim’s engine.
Skyrim has been out for 12 years, one of the greatest games of 2 generations past that has since been re-released numerous times to the joy of the internet. Despite this, an even older title, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has not seen nearly as much love as its successor.
Skyblivion aims to change that. A project aiming to recreate Oblivion in the Skyrim engine has finally received a release date after all this time. This decade-long worth of volunteer work has revealed that it will arrive in 2025. This is accompanied by a release trailer:
However, the video’s description says 2025, “At the latest.” This comes from Rebelsize, one of the modders working on the project. They stated that: “Making games takes time, this goes double for a volunteer project the size of a AAA game that took a team of full-time DEVS years to make. Regardless we would like to share today that Skyblivion is in a state where we can promise a 2025 release at the latest. We hope with your support, to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation.”
Ultimately, the Skyblivion team wants to encourage more people to volunteer and help recreate one of the best games ever made. Rebelsize commented on the video below: “2 years to wrap things up and get it into your hands. Its been a crazy ride, but we are confident we can do it. Personally I think we can beat our estimates but as per usual it depends on how much free time we can spend on our hobby project and how many people sign up to help out after this video.”
The last thing they stated was this: “I want to thank everyone who has followed the project from the bottom of my heart, I hope you will enjoy every pixel once the time comes.” Overall, while Skyrim’s engine is dated, it is still incredibly exciting to see one of these huge mods come close to its conclusion.
