Insiders indicate that Sega could be reviving 3 more classic IPs.
It’s always sad when some of our favorite game franchises go dormant with little to nothing mentioned for years to come. Well, players rejoice, as a new rumor suggests that Sega could be looking into reviving even more of their classic IPs, namely Neon Genesis Evangelion, Panzer Dragoon and Sakura Wars. This does seem to be a part of the initiative by Sega to bring back plenty of their dormant IPs as seen during the 2023 The Game Awards with the studio showing off reimagined versions of their older properties.
For those of you who didn’t watch The Game Awards and would like to know what you missed – Sega showed off that they will be making revivals of Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe and most excitingly, Jet Set Radio and Streets of Rage. Unfortunately, we did learn about some of these revivals earlier than intended as many of them were leaked thanks to an internal meeting video that showed off Jet Set Radio, as well as early footage of Sonic Frontiers. While these are the revivals we have confirmation on, they’re not the only one’s rumored to be in the works.
If what is said by Insider Gaming is to be believed, Sega is looking to revive at least 10 dormant IPs, all of which have currently been greenlit by the company. These revivals are said to have been in development between 2020 and 2021. The ones that were showcased at The Game Awards were the ones further in development. Insider Gaming has also confirmed at least three out the five other titles currently in development, these being Panzer Dragoon, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Sakura Wars.
Now, with most rumors we would understandably be skeptical but this does line up with the fact that Sega did trademark over 12 games in December 2023. The trademark for the franchises include After Burner, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, House of the Dead, Kid Chameleon, Outrun, and Super Monkey Ball. While we haven’t gotten confirmation yet, this is still incredibly exciting news.
