Welcome onboard Guybrush, would you like us to show you the world of Sea of Thieves to you?
When it comes to successful Lucas Arts games from the 90s, Monkey Island is no doubt one of them. In Monkey Island and its consecutive games, we would take the role of one of the well-known pirates, Guybrush Threepwood, and lead him to find undiscovered treasure and make friendships just by clicking on the screen. While it might sound a bit boring to new players, Monkey Island was quite popular in PC gaming back in the day.
Despite being a pirate-themed game, Monkey Island usually employed slapstick comedy, witty dialogues, and clever puzzles. That’s why its effects are still lasting and praised to this day. The franchise had a recent comeback with Return of the Monkey Island a few years ago too, so they are continuing to be relevant in the gaming market.
Sea of Thieves on the other hand, is another pirate-themed game, just like Monkey Island but a bit more action-filled rather than being laid-back. Developers of the title, Rare, saw the opportunity and made a big crossover with Monkey Island and revealed the free update that will be coming soon in the Xbox Showcase yesterday. Sea of Thieves is not far away from the crossover events to begin with; they also had another crossover with one of the best-known pirate movies, Pirate of the Caribbean as well. Overall its feedback was well received, and as a result, it led Rare to choose another pirate-themed media to include in Sea of Thieves.
Free update is going to include the iconic characters from the Monkey Island franchise, such as LeChuck, Elaine, and of course, the protagonist Guybrush. Our guess is that we will be able to take extra quests from them about their problems caused by other pirates, or they will mention a sacred treasure in one of the islands and we will have to find it.
The storyline will take place in Sea of Damned, which means you will be able to play the new missions without getting interrupted by other players online. One of the odd things that came out from this event was the original creator of Monkey Island Ron Gilbert was never told about the crossover, so he was as surprised as us when a new update got announced by Rare.
The Monkey Island addition will be free for everyone who owns Sea of Thieves, and the content will be dropped on the 20th of this month. Do not forget to check out Monkey Island’s remarkable characters in another universe.
