This “Zero Harm in Comms” Project has been established by both Riot Games and Ubisoft.
Toxicity in multiplayer games is sadly an all too common experience. Verbal abuse, griefing and more are constant troubles that you have undoubtedly encountered if you play many multiplayer experiences. Both Ubisoft and Riot Games’ titles are often mentioned when it comes to toxicity and is a constant battle for the developers.
In this new partnership however, these two companies are attempting to battle toxicity with the “Zero Harm in Comms” research project which is said to be a cross industry project and in an official blog post Riot Games have stated that they have “aligned in their mission to create gaming structures that foster more rewarding social experiences and avoid harmful interactions”.
In addition to this they further stated that: “As games become more and more popular around the world, the scale of this challenge only expands. That is why Riot is investing in AI systems to automatically detect harmful behavior and foster more positive communities across all our games”.
Both of these companies are members of the Fair Play Alliance and have stated that they “Believe that improving the social dynamics of online games will only come through communication, collaboration, and joint efforts across the gaming industry”.
The final part of their statement saw them proclaim that they “are committed to sharing our learnings from the first phase of this initiative with the entire industry next year”. This is a good sign for the future of multiplayer games and hopefully will be a major step in the right direction for making online communities much more inclusive and respectful.
