According to a Rockstar Insider, the Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remasters were in the company’s potential pipeline at some point in the last few years.
Remasters of the two titular titles were reportedly canned at Rockstar. This, of course, comes from Twitter user Tez2. The popular leaker has been a part of the GTA and Red Dead Redemption communities for a while and most recently has claimed that the two games (GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption) were, at the very least, in the idea’s phase at Rockstar. He stated on his Twitter:
There is apparently no obvious rhyme or reason for why these projects were canned, but Tez2 theorizes that it could be related to the poor reception surrounding the GTA Trilogy, which was received poorly by fans and critics alike, particularly for remasters of games that have been out for longer than a decade.
Rumors have circulated about remasters of the two titles. Last year, for example, a remaster of Red Dead Redemption was rumored to be coming prior to the release of GTA VI (which is also speculative).
Of course, it is still unknown whether the timelines align or if this has been a topic of discussion at Rockstar, but regardless, it seems that we will not be getting remasters of either Red Dead Redemption 1 or GTA IV.
The one silver lining from this debacle is that, luckily, both of these games are available via backward compatibility on the Xbox Series X/S. Obviously, this means the games will not have any of the major improvements that fans have been pining after, but a slightly improved frame rate and minor improvements to dated graphics still make for an enjoyable experience.
Furthermore, considering the variety of issues that plagued the release of the GTA Trilogy remasters, many fans may be relieved that Rockstar will not remaster these beloved titles.
