Ubisoft is developing an XCOM-style turn-based tactics Rainbow Six game.
According to recent rumors, Ubisoft is apparently developing a Rainbow Six-themed turn-based tactics game. Since most Rainbow Six games have been first-person shooters, this new entry would be a departure from the series’ usual fare. Launched in 1998, Rainbow Six quickly rose to prominence as a major player in the tactical shooter genre.
The series’ most recent entry, Rainbow Six Siege, has been a smashing success. Over the past decade, Ubisoft has steadily improved the 2015 shooter, making it a formidable rival to titles like Counter-Strike. A new claim, however, suggests the show may soon dive headfirst into a totally new genre.
Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has reported that Ubisoft is hard at work on an XCOM-style turn-based tactics Rainbow Six game. The game is expected to be published as a current-gen console title for various platforms, including Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, PC, and potentially Nintendo Switch 2.
Tom Henderson has suggested that XCOM will heavily influence the game. According to one source, “Just watch some XCOM gameplay if you want to get an idea, I’d say it’s an updated version of that with cinematic cutscenes and so on.”

Supposedly, players will command a squad of Rainbow Six Siege operators, and the game’s loop will make them choose which operator to use depending on their unique set of skills. The estimated time for the game is “about 25-30 hours, depending on player skill.” Take this story with a grain of salt, but it does make a lot of sense and would be a fascinating route for the Rainbow Six brand.
If you’re a fan of Rainbow Six, 2025 will be the best year yet—and not just because of the purportedly turn-based tactics label. Rainbow Six Siege is getting a makeover in June under the name Rainbow Six Siege X, with major gameplay improvements planned to set the tone for the next decade of the game.
Along with its free-to-play launch, it will expand the game’s audience like never before. It’s a risky approach, but the players can only wait until June to find out what happens. However, the success of this game will boost Ubisoft’s economic conditions, and they are also not doing badly with their recent title, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
