The PlayStation 3 has received a new firmware update, Almost six years since it ceased production.
There is currently a new firmware update available for the PlayStation 3. This update seems to add some minor performance improvements to the aged console. It has been over years since the PlayStation 3 ceased production back in 2017, and as of writing, it has already received two successors.
The update came as a surprise, as it comes just after Sony decides to go back on their decision to close down the console’s access to the PlayStation Store, back in the Summer of 2021. This update included a few minor performance tweaks. Users are also now required to use a password in order to access the PlayStation Network.
Many had assumed that Sony had no interest in continuing to maintain the old console, however, these new updates say otherwise. The firmware updates will download immediately and will need over 200MB of free space on either the PlayStation 3 Hard Disk Drive or on a removable storage media.
While many players have probably moved on to newer consoles, such as the PlayStation 3’s successors, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. There are many reasons to keep the old console around, especially as the PS3 is the home of many games that have yet to be remade or ported over. Many of these games require certain systems or technology that was only available for the PlayStation 3. In recent years, many of said games, have become something of cult classics or are considered hidden gems by many gamers.
As mentioned above, considering the backlash over closing down the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and that, to this day, there are still many loved games in the store. It is very likely that Sony will still be updating the nearly 17-year-old console, even if the updates are small and far between.
