A0 tape-out for the PlayStation 6 is anticipated late this year.
PlayStation games are becoming increasingly visible on PCs, but consoles still constitute the cornerstone of their gaming division. Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino said in a recent interview that PlayStation platforms are here to remain.
Sony doesn’t expect significant changes for PlayStation anytime soon, even though many players still play PlayStation 4 titles and the PlayStation 5 catalog is expanding. However, new information keeps leaking about Sony’s plan for the PlayStation 6.
It appears that Sony has completed the next-gen PlayStation SOC (System-on-Chip) design and is currently conducting pre-silicon validation, with an A0 tape-out anticipated late this year. This means PlayStation 6 is in the last step before production. The printed circuit boards and integrated circuits are usually considered finalized before reaching their last stage of design during tape-out before the design for a circuit model is sent out for production.
If we roll back to this same event before the PlayStation 5 release, this information implies that the console might not be too far from the PlayStation 6 release. Sony conducted the A0 tape-out two years before the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, suggesting that this might be the same for the PlayStation 6, and we could see the system arrive in 2027.
Considering that it could be two years out from the A0 tape, then 2027 looks like a potential release year for PlayStation 6. We absolutely cannot presume that everything will go as predicted or has in the past. This is merely something to consider.
