Cyberpunk 2077’s latest DLC Phantom Liberty has exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Who could have seen such a turn around for Cyberpunk 2077, the game has seen a huge resurgence in players and even its DLC is doing phenomenal, almost three months after its release. As of 31 December 2023, CD Projekt RED has announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has surpassed more than 5 million copies sold. This developer’s update further shows just how big of a success the DLC was not just for Cyberpunk 2077 but also for CD Projekt RED themselves.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was first released on 23 September 2023 and right off the bat, the DLC was met with excellent reviews and high praise from both players and critics alike. From what was shared by CD Projekt RED, this immense positive reception helped the latest expansion sell well over 3 million copies in its launch week. This would continue even months after its release.
In a recent post on 4 January 2024, the Polish studio shared on the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter page that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty had successfully sold well over 5 million copies as of 31 December 2023. The reason why this is so impressive is because by late November 2023, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty sold roughly 4.3 million copies – which means over the span of a month, the expansion was somehow able to sell another 700, 000 units just in time for its lifetime tally over the last month of 2023.
As shared previously by the studio, a CD Projekt RED sales update showed us that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty had an overall attachment rate of around 20%, which means that only 1 in 5 players that had the base game, purchased Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC two months into the expansion’s release. Probably one of the biggest reasons behind the huge uptick in sales of the expansion was because on both consoles and PC, Cyberpunk 2077 reached its lowest price ever which most likely incentivized players to purchase the game.
