Battlefield 2042 was released in a buggy state, and many fans now claim “they’ve had enough.”
EA has been faced with a brick wall now as 50,000 players of Battlefield 2042 are expressing their desires for a refund in a petition. This is an unprecedented situation and one that I imagine EA and Dice were unprepared for. The petition states, “EA’s release of Battlefield 2042 was a mockery of every customer who purchased this video game for $70 (USD) due to EA’s false advertising.”
This isn’t the first time that both Dice and EA have been in this kind of situation. In 2017, a little game called Star Wars: Battlefront II was released to a cavalcade of insults and hatred, though the reasons behind that game’s vitriol were wildly different. Battlefront II recovered and became a popular and stellar Star Wars entry.
The petition further stated, “Suppose this petition receives 50K signatures or more. In that case, one of the best class-action lawsuit lawyers in the country is willing to take our case against EA.” While this cannot be verified, if it turns out to be accurate, this is far more serious than anyone may anticipate.
Battlefield 2042 was released late last year due to a slew of hate for the game, which, according to fans, was broken and unplayable. Beyond this, gamers announced their displeasure around false marketing, claiming that much promised in the game wasn’t there. The irony of this situation is that Battlefield 2042 had the second-best launch of the entire series, boasting 4.2 million units sold in the first week.
Beyond this, the game peaked at 100,590 players on Steam during its first week of launch. This colossal number has trickled down to a 3,916 24-hour peak, which is an unbelievable drop in player base. This means that a petition for a refund (50,000 signatures) dwarfs the current player base, possibly proving to EA and Dice that this is an issue.
Hopefully, Dice and EA will allow time for bug fixing and get Battlefield 2042 in a state where players wish to play. However, considering the abuse spouted in the petition, it may be unfortunate that the game may not even recover.
