The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom players are quite disappointed after this decision.
When it comes to decisions, Nintendo is quite strict about what they opt for. Their choices, however, sometimes backfire despite the reasonable thought behind them. As we all know, the Nintendo Switch era of The Legend of Zelda games is quite popular, and it is not hard to see why. The success of both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom soared through the roleplaying and adventure genres and it clearly showed how a long-lasting name still can be as important in the gaming market. Although this is a very blatant case, Nintendo chose to not add new content to Tears of the Kingdom and it baffled a bunch of people and made them ask why.
In a recent interview with the lead director of both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Eiji Aonuma, they forwarded that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom does not need additional content support as their previous title did. Their decision mostly relies on the fact that they, as Nintendo, did deliver the most fun and exciting ways to play Tears of the Kingdom, or all the Legend of Zelda games in the Nintendo Switch altogether.
With all the previous DLC released for Breath of the Wild, both Nintendo and Eiji Aonuma think they already delivered what else to deliver in the current generation of Hyrule. If you did not know, Breath of the Wild received two different DLCs and these included new difficulty levels, a few side missions, lots of new customizations, and new weapons as well.
Now this begs the question of whether this is a signal for a new entry in the series or not. Instead of working on extra content for currently available games, Nintendo might have chosen the path of working on the new game with full force. This idea could also be supported by the knowledge of Nintendo’s plan to release a new console in the upcoming year.
Unfortunately, the whole idea of not delivering additional content to a game that sold almost 20 million units does not sound well, Nintendo could have easily chosen to split some parts of the team to push the hype train for the next game. But still, it is a decision, made internally by Nintendo. We would have to wait and see what sort of plans they made for the beloved Legend of Zelda franchise.
