Respawn Entertainment is rumored to be working on an unannounced project that’s set in the Titanfall universe.
Rumors of a new game from Respawn Entertainment surfaced after the studio’s parent company, Electronic Arts, pulled the plug on a Star Wars first-person shooter, released in 2014. Respawn Entertainment’s title, the original Titanfall captured the attention of many gamers with its dynamic and fresh gameplay. The sci-fi shooter received a sequel that was also critically acclaimed in the form of Titanfall 2.
Unfortunately, as for the follow-up, it did not achieve the same goal, by failing to meet EA’s sales expectations. Respawn Entertainment did revisit the Titanfall series’ setting for a free-to-play first-person battle Royale titled Apex Legends, and they have seemingly done the same thing once again for another unannounced game.
Claiming in an episode of Giant Bomb’s Game Morning Mess podcast, journalist Jeff Grubb, went on to say that Respawn Entertainment has been working on a project that was set in the same universe as Titanfall, having started out as a Skunkworks project and involving the director of the original game, Respawn Entertainment creative head Steve Fukuda, according to Grubb.
The studio CEO, Vince Zampella, revealed in 2023 that Fukuda was the leader of a small Skunkworks team in Respawn Entertainment that was given the task of “finding the fun in something new.” However, Grubb was quick to point out that the ongoing Titanfall project, which still happened to be in its prototype phase, was definitely not Titanfall 3. Grubb went on to say that Respawn Entertainment’s canceled Apex Legends and Titanfall crossover game was essentially meant to be the latter series’ third installment.
During the podcast, Grubb mentioned the in-development Titanfall game while he was discussing the recent cancellation of Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars FPS which had coke about when the president of EA’s non-sports games revision, Laura Miele, announced the cancellation via a note amid a major company shake-up that resulted in the layoffs of about 5% of its total workforce.
Respawn Entertainment’s canceled Star Wars title would have let players play as a Mandalorian mercenary taking on bounties across the galaxy. However, EA believed that the game would have been too much of a financial risk despite the overall feedback on it being always positive, according to the report. Sadly, this resulted in the game’s termination. Despite this, the studio has a lot on its plate, with the studio currently working on a Star Wars RTS game with Bit Reactor, as well as a sequel to the 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Despite the crushing news, fans still have much to look forward to in the coming future.
