A recent update to Monster Hunter Rise has implemented a controversial new feature which has broken the game’s Steam Deck Support.
Updates are a staple of most modern games, and they are oftentimes done to fix bugs and other issues that players might be experiencing with the game or sometimes ads in new features. Well, Monster Hunter Rise has certainly added quite the controversial new feature and that is the Enigma DRM. This in turn, has also completely broken the game’s Steam Deck Support. This strange new addition comes three years after the game’s release and has many longtime fans of the series concerned about the future of the franchise.
The implementation of Enigma DRM was first noticed by Twitter user, DakaRFT, who identified the new software by inspecting the executable for Monster Hunter Rise after the most recent update. What they were able to find showed that Capcom had seemingly removed Denuvo from the game and replaced it with another form of anti-piracy software. For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Enigma Protector, it is a form of digital rights management solution which is designed specifically to work with Windows software.
This means that anything that utilizes it is incompatible with other operating systems such as Linux, which is what the Steam Deck’s SteamOS is based on. This has essentially broken the game’s Steam Deck Support and many players have already reported being unable to play the game after the update.
Luckily, fans received a swift response from Capcom who acknowledged the reports and also stated that a new patch was going live soon and that the company was investigating the Steam Deck compatibility issues. Sadly, this isn’t the first time Capcom has made a stunt using The Enigma Protector, as the same software was implemented into Resident Evil: Revelations which led to the game being review bombed almost 11 years after its initial release.
As of writing, numerous fans have taken to social media to air their displeasure at what was implemented in the latest update for Monster Hunter Rise. Many have expressed that instead of implementing new DRM, the company should rather remove it since the game is almost 3 years old already.
