A new Meta Quest Update brings a highly demanded feature to Meta Quest 3.
Meta Quest 3, Meta’s latest VR headset, is receiving an update that will add numerous features, some of which have been long awaited, such as the ability to lie down while gaming. The v64 update is beginning to roll out now, which means players who have access to the headgear won’t be waiting for too long to use these new functions.
Having the ability to lie down while using the headset has been a highly-demand feature on most gamers’ wishlists for quite a long time. While most games are designed to be played while players are standing or in a seated position, some of the more casual uses of the headset, such as watching movies or hanging out in the VR chat, can lend themselves to lying down. However, doing this hasn’t been widely possible for most players, as laying down changes the visual perspective along with what happens to the virtual avatar.
With the v63 Meta Quest being updated back in March, it brought with it the capability of allowing players to lie down while playing a game or enjoying a virtual reality experience. However, this update only came to the Meta Quest 2 and the Meta Quest Pro, and the Meta Quest 3 is also receiving the much-needed capability for players to lie down and enjoy. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth went on to explain that the delay was due to how the automatic Meta Quest 3 boundary works in comparison to the other headsets.
In addition to these changes, the v64 update also brings external microphone support features, allowing players to connect a USB-C mic to their Meta Quest 3 headsets directly, initially bypassing the internal mic. The device itself will also continue to cast to an external screen when it’s taken off, and through visuals, it will have seen improved resolution and image quality.
Players can now more easily connect to others in the Meta Horizon worlds. They may also choose to display where they are located in the public world, allowing their friends to join them directly. It’s understandable that some of these features are still very experimental, and not everyone will be able to access them right away.
However, Meta typically sends out updates in waves, so not every headset gets the update simultaneously. If players don’t see the update available on their headsets after restarting, the best course of action would be to leave it in idle mode until the update can be made available. Officially, support for the original Meta Quest has ended, so unfortunately, those users of the headset will not be receiving this update at all.
