Fans were quick to find out about AI’s involvement in the promotional artwork for the new Magic: The Gathering cards.
AI, or artificial intelligence, is currently a can of worms that nobody wants to open. Its involvement in every aspect of life has been either too good, or extremely off that it started becoming more and more noticeable. Selected ads, voice manipulators, image sharpeners, and many more have become more common with AI’s involvement. Sadly, as harsh as it sounds, people do not like AI being thrown into an original work.
We have heard of AI being implemented in script writing in video games, and images being “fixed” with AI too, but creating an image with an AI and using it as a whole artwork might have been over the top. Recently, Magic: The Gathering’s Twitter account posted the upcoming cards with a fancy image. While most people brushed it off, some small amount started noticing inconsistencies between the images and the creation of the card’s visuals. It then led to the conclusion of the artist who made the art with the help of AI.
Wizard of the Coast, who owns the popular card game, came against the rumors that it was made with AI and created an announcement post saying none of the creators who work for the company use AI as it is forbidden to do so. However, the artist who worked on the Magic: The Gathering’s card showcase was suddenly let go from the company a few days later. Seems like the trace of the post that shows the card was also deleted, which does seem to vibe that AI was certainly used in creating the artwork for Magic: The Gathering.
Unlike artists coming off with an apology or being silent, the artists came forward and explained that they quit the position themselves. The reason behind it was the fact that Wizard of the Coast had a moral stand when it comes to AI, but once implemented, they mentioned their disregard., which can be frustrating as artists did what they asked. Still, using AI in any artistic work for an original creation shouldn’t be in people’s minds. Let’s hope that, just like any other fad, AI will lose its relevancy sooner or later.
