A small indie game by the name of Lethal Company steals the show from AAA games.
The latest gaming crazes always come out of nowhere. Like the recent Hi-Fi Rush, Lethal Company was released without any advertisements or announcements. It was dropped on Steam on the exact day it was released and for some valid reasons, it’s climbing the popularity chart day by day. Simplistic, yet its unnerving gameplay is what makes people being drawn into it.
To talk about Lethal Company’s gameplay premise, players are tasked to collect scrap metals from abandoned planets for the company they are working for. While the premise looks basic and sounds like a cozy game, Lethal Company is far from it. Each planet includes bizarre creatures that hunt players down and it gives a high sense of horror and fright. Since the title is multiplayer only, players can often see their crewmates being snatched or chased by freakish creatures.
People seem to have liked this title as it stays with 23 thousand positive reviews and social media is filled with snippets from the game. Streaming services like Twitch are also getting their fair share of viewers as well. Even so, Lethal Company achieved a high popularity ranking in Steam’s front page chart, passing titles like the newly released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Baldur’s Gate 3. According to SteamDB, it also reached 117 thousand players at some point, which is nothing to scoff at.
The game’s developer, Zeekerss, stated on their Twitter that there will be more content eventually added in later weeks. These include some enemies, that actually retaliate towards the player instead of chasing them down, which would be cool to see. Keep in mind that the game is still in early access, so, some bugs might appear, but players do not care as they love the interaction between the creatures, teammates, and random events that occur. Lethal Company is one of the rare occasions that show that indie games can be more exciting and fun to play than some of the AAA games on the market.
