It seems that the League of Legends MMO now faces an uncertain future as its producer has left Riot Games.
It seems that players who were looking forward to experiencing the world of Runterra in the League of Legends MMO spin-off are in for some bad news, as the project’s executive producer has left Riot Games.
Initially released back in 2009, League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game, or MOBA for short. The game took heavy inspiration from the Warcraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients. For those of you unfamiliar with League of Legends, players get to play as one of the game’s 162 champions and face off in 5-v-5 isometric battles.
Due to its rather addictive gameplay, League of Legends has earned itself quite a large player base. The game has also received multiple spin-offs such as Legends of Runterra, Teamfight Tactics, and most recently the upcoming action RPG The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story. The game even has its own animated series, the critically acclaimed Arcane on Netflix.
The League of Legends MMO was first announced back in 2020. Since then we haven’t heard much about the game and what information we do know is incredibly scarce and will likely get even scarcer.
In a Twitter thread, the game’s former Executive Producer, Greg Street, announced that he was stepping down from his role at Riot Games. Street had previously worked as the lead System Designer for Blizzard’s MMO World of Warcraft. As for the reason for his departure, Greg cited “a combo of personal and professional considerations”, despite this he assured players that the League of Legends MMO was “in good hands”
Despite no longer being involved in the game’s development, Street finished the thread by stating that he would be playing it alongside Riot’s fans when the game eventually releases. Many of the thread’s responses were filled with praise from both gamers and former co-workers alike.
Despite previously saying that the League of Legends MMO would likely never be released, Greg Street seems to be excited to experience the game when it eventually sees the light of day. The League of Legends MMO is currently still in development.
