Hackers wanted a hefty ransom before releasing the files to the public, seems like Insomniac did not care about the warnings.
One of Sony’s branches, Insomniac Games has been hit by hackers and one and a half terabytes of information have been leaked to the masses. The leaked documents include upcoming information about Insomniac Games’ next project, such as a new Wolverine game in the works. These sheets of important data were held in the hacker’s possession for two weeks and were recently released to the public.
The group of hackers infiltrated the servers, who go by the name of Rhysida, reached out to Sony and Insomniac and showcased the major opening in their security systems. In order to not leak the important files, they asked for a ransom of 50 bitcoins, which roughly equals 2 million dollars. Both Insomniac and Sony were aware of the threat and briefly mentioned the cyber attack to the authorities. But seems like they did not care for the warnings of the hacking group as the information was uploaded to the internet today after two weeks of wait.
Files include a lot of top-secret information about Insomniac’s future plans, worker’s details, and their general schedule for upcoming projects, including videos and code from an upcoming Wolverine title that is halfway done. To showcase the proof of the hacking’s legitimacy, the group shared information related to the voice actor of Spider-Man, Yuri Lowenthal. Despite the heavy warnings, and allegedly an investigation started by Sony about the cyber attack, the conclusion is going to end up damaging Sony’s overall structure.
The whole situation reminds the GTA VI leak that appeared a few months ago, where a 16-year-old asked for a ransom before leaking the game to the public. The case went cold as the hacker was deemed to be underage and mentally unstable. However, for the case of Sony, things are looking pretty grim as the distribution of redacted information could end up causing more damage than intended.
