The game studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming Wolverine game, Insomniac Games, was made a target of ransomware.
Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, recently competed for the Game of the Year award alongside other studios such as Remedy Entertainment, Larian Studios, Capcom, and Nintendo, with Larian Studios taking the win at the end of the day.
However, if not getting the win wasn’t crushing enough, now Insomniac Games has to deal with an alleged cyberattack with the successful launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and having fans wait in anticipation for the Wolverine game. The growing popularity may have attracted the wrong kind of attention in the form of ransomware.
Commonly done at this point, cyberattacks happen routinely, and most of the time, high-profile entities such as gaming studios and other day-to-day corporations tend to draw the eyes of hackers hoping to make a few by holding high-priority information up for ransom.
Companies such as Bandai Namco, CD Projekt Red, Riot Games, and Rockstar Games have also fallen prey to these attacks. It seems cybercriminals have grown much more comfortable with targeting the gaming industry. Insomniac Games is the latest victim that’s been added to an already extensive list.
The Rhysida Group stated that Insomniac Games has seven days to pay an undisclosed amount before publicizing the full dataset. However, the group is running a public auction of the data with the price starting at 50 bitcoins- Roughly a little over $2 million.
With all this happening at the time of the cyber criminals’ post, neither Sony nor Insomniac Games have officially commented on the incident, leaving all this up to speculation. However, with the news of the attacks barely after the release of the anticipated Spider-Man 2 and have shifted their focus to other titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, this attack, if accurate, could spell disruption and spoilers in progress for Sony and Insomniac Games.
