At the end of this year, Friday the 13th: The Game – Ultimate Slasher Edition will cease its sales and by the end of next year, it’ll completely disappear.
One of the most renowned horror movie franchises, Friday the 13th, had a multiplayer game released for it almost six years ago. Unlike what people expected, it turned out to be a rather enjoyable game with its hunter versus-hunted elements. For a horror movie dedicated to that genre, it suited the current horror game aspects and delivered an actually solid experience in terms of gameplay. Despite still being successful, the maker of the game, Gun Media, stated that they will be plugging the plug of Friday the 13th: The Game by the end of the next year.
Gun Media’s plan is to keep the game running until the end of this year with online support and playability. The reason being the Friday the 13th license is about to be expired on the 31st of December. After the end of this year, it will be unavailable to purchase, though people can still use online functions to set up games and play with other people. In order to let players try out the game and to have them in their library, Gun Media went on a change with the price. The base game will be priced at $4.99 and each DLC pack will be $0.99 until the 31st of December.
Friday the 13th was not an all in-your-face type of multiplayer game. In terms of sales and reliable background, it did not do well, however, it had a small community that kept it strong enough to live for nearly five years. Released in 2017, this multiplayer game had a tumbling way of reaching the end of 2023 with never-ending problems. When it was first released, players came across server issues and glitches that often caused their PC’s struggle running it. After those problems were settled, Gun Media had issues with license ownership in 2020. Further work on the game was canceled due to legal reasons and it is a surprise that it has been still active since then.
An announcement on Gun Media’s profile caused quite a lot of distress among players as they did not want this game to leave the market. As we said, Friday the 13th: The Game was still and is a functional game. Seven years of continuous run is nothing to scoff at. It is sad to see a community favorite go, but there is nothing you can do if the legal business is deeply involved. Maybe some modders or dedicated fans will take a look and find a workaround to keep the servers alive after the dropped support; who knows?
Friday the 13th: The Game will stop its sales on the 31st of December this year and completely vanish off the market at the end of 2024. There is still a lot of time, but if you want to live the last months of this underrated multiplayer game, grab a copy. And if you are interested in the work of Gun Media, they are working on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre game right now, so be sure to check on that if you are an avid horror genre fan.
