This upcoming change for Fortnite will affect both first and third-party additions, made by companies and players themselves.
Epic Games has announced that they are planning to implement a new “multi-game ecosystem” with their new, upcoming age rating system regarding the custom content of Fortnite. As you all know, Fortnite is considered a huge marketing platform for media such as artists, other games, and movies. Starting next month though, companies or players who want to add new content to Fortnite must submit a mandatory questionnaire.
This way, the content will go through a system created by the International Age Rating Coalition. It will filter the content in question to its respective section. It will be easier for major rating coalitions such as ESRB and PEGI to check the provided content and rate accordingly. All this effort is for one thing only, and that is the safety of any children playing Fortnite. Parents of course need to know what their child can access and decide whether it is safe for them to allow certain mods or additions to be added to base Fortnite.
We have to remind you that Fortnite used to be a PvE game where you had to defend yourself from monsters, unfortunately, the battle royale mode has taken over with a huge margin of players. Despite the popularity of the battle royale genre, Fortnite is being played by people of all ages, and not all of the game modes include fighting between each other. Recent community-created content mimics most of the other popular game modes from other titles and those are in need of going through filters and age-ratings as well.
With the implementation of age restrictions, parental controls also will be added to the base game. Parents can decide whether their child can play certain maps or game modes, this will also include creative mode if needed. The age rating and restrictions will start going live on the 14th of November this year, but if you have custom content that you want to add, you have to wait until the 16th of October, which is the date when they start giving questionaries for your prepared content.
