According to a recent rumor, FIFA is going to be a free-to-play game, but not in time for FIFA 22, which will be released on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC.
FIFA 22 will not be free-to-play, but FIFA 23 will, according to a new report. Just last week, Konami revealed that PES, FIFA’s sole major competitor, will be renamed eFootball and will be free to play. Many people speculated about when and if FIFA will follow suit and adopt free-to-play as well.
The rumor, which originates from FIFA insider Donk, suggests that FIFA 23 would not only be free-to-play but will also include cross-play. While the latter is simple to see, it’s tough to envision FIFA turning free-to-play, especially after its lone competition did so. How so? Because it isn’t required. Every year, FIFA sells a large number of tickets. However, the majority of its money comes from microtransactions rather than game sales, so a free-to-play model makes sense. Not only is everything on this page unofficial, but it is also subject to change.
EA has yet to comment on any of this as of the time of publication. We don’t anticipate this changing, but if it does, we’ll make sure to update the story. If FIFA 23 is going to be a free-to-play game, we won’t know until next summer when the game is released. And, while it may appear that this is a move that will be well-received by all supporters, this really isn’t the case. When Konami announced the name change and the new free-to-play model, there was a lot of anger from PES fans for a variety of reasons, and this will happen again if FIFA follows suit.
FIFA 22 will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on October 1, 2021.
