The famous worldwide gaming event E3 has canceled its digital event as well.
After E3 canceled the in-person event, gaming fans around the world are now in the know that there will be no replacement digital event this year.
This means that one of the most influential gaming events in the world has been permanently canceled this year. The news broke on Twitter via user Will Powers, who stated this on Twitter:
For some, this may come as a surprise, but in all honesty, much of the industry has passed the gaming show. Rather than announcing titles in one huge show, many companies have chosen to reveal their games numerous times at numerous shows throughout the year. Furthermore, it has been a very long time since E3 was the only show dedicated to games.
Geoff Keighley, one of the powerhouses in the gaming show medium, stated this on Twitter following the announcement:
Keighley is no doubt poking a little fun, especially since his show Summer Games Fest will continue to go as planned as an in-person event. Geoff Keighley later stated this in regards to the cancellation:
The ESA stated the following: “We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022.” They further stated: “Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.”
So, there’s evidence that the infamous show is not dead. However, with other gaming shows taking the vacuous spotlight, and since E3 is already suffering, with PlayStation already not being involved and other companies all seeming to go their separate ways, gamers are left with one sad and nostalgic question: Do gamers need an E3?
