After more than two decades, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi will be getting a new entry into the series.
Bandai Namco reveals, via the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2023, that after nearly 15 years, a new entry into the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game series is finally in the works. This event was hosted by Bandai Namco and was devoted solely to the successful anime franchise, included in this event was a card game tournament, a tournament for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and musical interludes performed by Hironobu Kageyama, the singer of many songs made for Dragon Ball Z.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, it is a series of 3D arena-style fighting games originally released for the PS2 and Wii consoles. The game series spawned three games and with each game gained a bigger roster of characters than the last. Besides a PSP spin-off, there hasn’t been a new entry into the series in over two decades, with Xenoverse taking over Budokai Tenachi’s mantle as the de facto DBZ arena fighter. Well, until now.
The trailer for Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi starts with footage from the third entry into the series Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and shows off some familiar characters such as; Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Ultimate Gohan, and Vegito. The footage then switches to Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan, which is rendered in the same graphical style from the older games, before immediately switching art styles into a new modern look for the series.
The art style for the game seems to try to emulate the look of the anime, this is similar to Dragon Ball FighterZ with its Sleek cell-shaded look. Many fans took to Twitter to express their excitement about the new announcement, however, we are yet to see actual gameplay yet.
While we don’t know much about the new entry into Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, fans of Dragon Ball will have to stay tuned for any new updates and announcements.
