From PR nightmares to fan outrage, Disney’s Snow White reboot is seemingly losing this uphill battle.
I thought that the plug was already pulled from this project, and I was wrong. An impending live-action adaptation of a cherished classic, in this case, Disney’s Snow White, has sparked no lack of debate, as is typical of Disney’s fare. The Little Mermaid last year was a disaster at the box office, but word already got out that Rachel Zegler was attached to star in their newest title.
From her remarks on how much she loathed the first production, boy, did many things emerge. I am sure that everyone can recall how she made negative comments that the film is set as if it takes place in the contemporary era, not 1937. And the fact that, according to her, the prince who fancied Snow White was a weirdo stalker.
Basically, completely disregards how beloved that movie is and how demeaning her words are to people who enjoy the simplicity that was the original Disney’s Snow White. Various interviews are still up on the internet as immortalizations of her statements regarding Disney’s Snow White.
It was a total and utter PR nightmare. The team saw the writing on the wall and immediately reverted to their former course, with her asserting her love for the original. But it was too little, too late.
There was an image that found itself being smuggled into the people’s attention online. It showed what many first assumed to be the seven dwarves. What was really the case, however, was that those supposed dwarves were actually a group of people playing the role of the bandits. And to the misfortune of the viewers, the dwarves later appear to be like uncanny CGI creatures.
The animals, the entrance, and pretty much everything else is computer-generated imagery. And the entire concept of the clip seemed to have been generated by an artificial intelligence system. The dwarves, again, are strange and unsettling. This is the result of Peter Dinklage’s assertion that it is really insulting to employ little people for these parts.
Disney responded by not using actual dwarfs in the production. Rather, they have the CGI abominations as described before instead. When you consider this, you may wonder why they even attempted to pursue Disney’s Snow White live-action feature.
At D23, Disney unveiled the first official trailer and teaser, and the audience was clearly not pleased, not in the slightest bit. As of writing this, Disney’s Snow White trailer currently houses 254,000 dislikes to its 52,000 likes, and almost 5 million views. To put it simply, it is being completely demolished.
Ignoring the numerous reshoots and significant delays, this whole affair with the public reaction and criticisms regarding the Rachel Zegler scandals, coupled with the fact that this film is definitely going to cost a ton of money—possibly 350 million—already gives the impression that it could potentially be another Disney live-action catastrophe.
Another heartless Disney remake cash-grab was not what the people wanted. At this point in time, the negative publicity surrounding Disney’s Snow White has undoubtedly added insult to Disney’s already tarnished reputation. I suppose we shall discover the outcome in 2025, but I would not hold out too much hope for this one. I was already against the idea of making these live-actions, this just further strengthened my resolve to dislike them.
