The Australian Classification Board has put a full stop to the sales of Disco Elysium. The board stated:
Reason for Refused Classification Games 1(a): The computer game is classified RC in accordance with the National Classification Code, Computer Games Table, 1. (a) as computer games that “depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified.”
As we can see, the main reason for this is the heavy use of drugs, sex, and violence. It was initially released in 2019 only for PC. But this time, publisher ZAUM brought it to PlayStation 4 and Switch. So, it was necessary for the board to go through the whole game.
This ban prohibits further sales and will put a heavy fine or jail on whoever tries to sell it or import it to a country. The law doesn’t apply to its consumers.
The Classification Board has a history of being harsh with video games. Hotline Miami, The Witcher 2, and Saint Rows 4 were also banned. Many more games had to go through some appeal, too.
