Day’s Gone Was As Successful As It’s Other Sony Counterparts
Day’s Gone released in 2019, to a mixed reception. Players praised the game for it’s gritty and high intensity action, while others degraded it for it’s poor AI and lacklustre story. Whatever your opinion on the game itself, there is one thing that is an irrefutable fact. It was a commercial hit.
The game in fact proved quite the opposite to what it’s review ratings would have you believe. According to former Bend Studios, Game Director, Jeff Ross, the game exceeded some of the most popular games ever released on the PlayStation platform, he stated this on Twitter:
As Ghost of Tsushima hit it’s incredible milestone of 8 million copies sold, Jeff Ross stated how Day’s Gone also had hit this milestone, and that since then it has sold more and beyond that it also garnered heavy popularity on Steam.
He is simply pointing out one of the many dilemmas that are faced by studios, in this case “Can we make a sequel?” The rumours of a refuted Day’s Gone sequel were abundant enough, but Jeff Ross later replied to Twitter user Xico, with this:
The former studio Director, to this day, believes that a sequel to his beloved project would have been able to “roar back” as he states in the tweet and garner huge critical acclaim. Whether this would be true is, unfortunately, in the eye of the beholder. Sony canned the idea for a Day’s Gone sequel regarding the poor reviews that the game received (despite its huge sales figures.)
Regardless, with Sucker Punch Productions having released the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s cut last year (Check out our review for the original version of Ghost of Tsushima here.) It has no doubt had the effect of an already large snowball rolling down a gargantuan mountain, garnering critical and commercial acclaim at almost every turn.
Moreover, with Sony having picked up other incredible franchises such as the remake of Knights of The Old Republic, announced at the Game awards late last year. Plus the potential of a Last of Us Remake. It is unfortunately expected that Day’s Gone will remain abandoned in a corner, gathering dust, with one question burning on every fans mind:
What could have been?
