CD Projekt RED confirms that Cyberpunk 2077’s first and only major expansion will be a paid-for DLC.
CD Projekt RED, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, have confirmed that the game’s first major expansion, Phantom Liberty, will be paid DLC. This is similar to how the developers handled DLC in their previous titles, such as The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.
CD Projekt RED’s Global PR Director, Radek Grabowski, confirmed in a comment to GamesRadar+ that the expansion would be a paid-for feature but then further added: “As for the expansion’s pricing, we have not revealed exact details yet, but it will be a paid one.”
This shouldn’t really come as much of a shock to most fans of CD Projekt RED, as this is very similar to how the developer handled DLC content in previous games, like in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In those games, the developers made small add-ons, such as optional quests and armor sets, that were released as free content.
However, their larger DLC, Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, was released as paid DLC that was much closer to old-school expansion packs rather than what we usually think of as modern DLC. In the case of Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty will serve as the game’s first major expansion after the recent free Edgerunners DLC.
Even though a price has yet to be revealed, Grabowski confirmed that players needn’t worry about the expansion’s price, saying, “Our expansions are traditionally cheaper than full-price games.”
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be the game’s first and only major expansion. However, it won’t be the last we’ll see of Night City. Considering the fact that just last month, CD Projekt Red confirmed that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, was in the works. This, paired with a new Witcher trilogy, means there’s a lot more we can expect from the Polish developer.
