A director for Overwatch 2 has recently revealed that the content that was cut from PvE was meant for Overwatch MMO.
Many fans of Overwatch 2 were incredibly outraged after the announcement was made that Blizzard and the Overwatch team would be canceling all upcoming plans for the game’s PvE mode. However, it would seem that the reason for this, according to one of the game’s directors, was because of the ambitious plan of turning the team-based shooter franchise into its own MMO after the PvE mode was released.
Despite the cancellation of the planned of Overwatch 2’s PvE mode, the game will still be receiving other content, such as fast paced co-op story missions. These missions will take place on large maps where players will have to face off against enemies in order to progress the game’s story further. Blizzard has confirmed that these missions will be released in season 6, which is scheduled to be coming later this year.
We learned of story missions from the recently revealed Overwatch 2 roadmap, which included a slew of other content such as limited-time events, new maps, as well as character mastery. You can learn more about the roadmap via their official YouTube. Alongside this roadmap, Aaron Keller, one of the Overwatch 2 directors also revealed that the game’s developers had plans to turn the hero shooter into an MMO. This was planned to happen after the release of PvE mode. However, after Project Titan, which was the name of an upcoming MMO title, the team put all their focus on Overwatch.
As for the cancellation of PvE, the major reason for this was due to the sheer scope of the project, which has expanded far beyond what they had initially intended and wouldn’t have made a cohesive experience for players. If Blizzard had gone through with the initial plans for Overwatch 2, it would have been the “true realization” of what they had originally envisioned for Project Titan.
Overwatch 2 is filled to the brim with easily recognizable characters, and it would have made sense to use their stories as a starting point for other PvE content. A perfect example of this is with Reinhardt and the Crusaders, or Black watch and Reaper. Well, most of these stories we read about in the game’s various tie-in comics and animated shorts, it would have been great to experience these stories in game.
Sadly, the cancelled PvE isn’t the only mode that fans were upset about upon its cancellation. The now cancelled Hero mode would have easily expanded the game’s lore and story while also finally giving insight into characters’ pasts and back story. Fans have understandably, taken to social media to air their frustrations as it would seem that the only way to learn about the game’s story is through story missions.
