A decent amount of other films came out over the weekend, but it looks like Aquaman 2 will be the winner at the box office.
The final weekends of the year included many anticipated films, such as The Iron Claw, Aquaman 2, and Anyone But You. Each film is a different genre. Aquaman 2 is a superhero action film. Anyone But You is a rom-com, and The Iron Claw is a dramatic wrestling biopic. We also have films keeping decent at the box office, such as Godzilla Minus One and Wonka.
Aquaman 2 marks the end of the DC extended universe we have seen over the last decade. It is also the previous superhero film to come out this year and might continue the lackluster box office performances of other superhero movies this year.
While Aquaman 2 will more than likely win the Christmas weekend box office, it’ll open with $4.5 million on Thursday previews, which isn’t the best. But as Christmas and the holidays go on, it’s looking to gain more viewers. It might be a case of those waiting for it to appear on streaming. Many other DC films in the last few years, such as the previous Flash film, have come out on streaming in great numbers.
Aquaman 2 will more than likely get around $37 to $43 million in its domestic debut over the holiday weekend. That is a great departure compared to the first Aquaman’s opening weekend. It also didn’t beat Marvel in its recent opening weekend of the film The Marvels. Interestingly, the first Aquaman also came out around the holidays. It opened with $67 million.
It might not be doing the best, but a lot of that is because of franchise fatigue and superhero films not doing as well as they used to, as this year has proved. This year has been a massive one for films such as Barbie and Oppenheimer, which did great at the box office. The year will probably end with Aquaman 2 at the top of the box office, and it might stay that way for a little bit.
