Alone in the Dark to star Jodie Comer and David Harbour and will be released by the end of the year
Alone in the Dark was a staple of the horror genre when it was first released in 1992. With the current trend of remaking old horror titles, one of the Resident Evil franchises is helping pioneer; it was only a matter of time before this cult classic got the reboot it deserved. As of today, a playable teaser is available, as well as the announcement of the release date. We also got to see some stills of the leading actors who are taking the reins of the classic characters.
There is a very strong creative team behind the game. THQ Nordic will be publishing Alone in the Dark, with development by Pieces Interactive. The story is being headed up by writer Mikael Hedberg. Horror fans will recognise this name in an instant with him being a writer on Amnesia: Dark Descent and Soma.
Hadberg will be adapting the games original story where Emily Hartwood is helped by PI Edward Carnby to look into her uncle’s suicide at the Derceto Mansion. Jodie Comer and David Harbour will be taking on the roles of the leads, Emily and Edward. The story will allow the player to play through as each protagonist with unique interactions and NPCs for each character to experience.
The playable demo was also released today on PC, Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5. This demonstrates a lot of the game’s horror elements as well as the excellent sound design that is sure to have a spine-chilling effect on the player. The playable teaser also showed that, like many of the horror remakes that have come out of late, the game would change from the fixed camera of the original. Despite this change of mechanics, the tone of the demo shows the uncomfortable atmosphere, and the use of the fear of the unknown will be prevalent in the reboot.
The Alone in the Dark demo doesn’t feature either of the main characters, instead a young girl named Grace, who is exploring the mansion wanting to send a letter to Emily. The combat that will be in the final game was not shown in this teaser due to the young age of the protagonist. The hands of the 1997 game are all over this extract of Alone in the Dark; From the terrifying climate that helped inspire the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, to the reimagining of the original story.
Along in the Dark is set to release on 25th October this year, with 2 versions available. The Standard Edition and a Dulux version will come with an OG costume pack, a vintage horror filter pack, and a commentary from writer Mikael Hedberg and the creator of the original game Frederick Raynal.
