Shortly after the news that Square Enix Montreal would be closing down, it seems that a lot of their mobile games would be shutting down with it.
Studio Onoma, previously known as Square Enix Montreal, tweeted an announcement that on 1 December 2022, a number of their titles would no longer be available for download on the App Store and Google Play. These titles include: Arena Battle Champions, Deus Ex Go, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes. Studio Onoma then went on to say that players would no longer be able to access the games from 4 January 2023. Meaning players would not be able to make further purchases for these games and any recent purchases would not be refunded.
This news comes just after the studio announced that it would be closing down, only a few weeks after rebranding itself from its previous Square Enix Montreal moniker. Despite this, there is still no news as to what will happen with the studio’s more successful mobile titles such as Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go. But they will most likely follow a similar fate as the studio’s other titles.
Despite the closure of Studio Onoma, fellow studio Eidos Montreal, which was also a part of the $300 million acquisition by Embracer Group back in May 2022, seems to be unaffected. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, they are even working on three major projects, one of them being a new Deus Ex title that is currently in very early stages of development. Which hopefully means we’ll hear more information about the project soon.
