The new Willy Wonka movie is at the top of the box office with a $39 million debut.
The new Wonka film has done well in its opening weekend. This is the third film we have seen in the Willy Wonka universe. The film Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, is looking to head into the holidays with a decent box office start. The reviews for Wonka are good, and it currently sits at an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is a family film, which also helps to go into the holidays as many families will go and see it.
As far as the international box office goes, it opened over the weekend with $43 million. The box office is hot right now as we have a couple of other films in the theater, such as The Hunger Games, which sits in second place, and The Boy And The Heron, which sits in third place.
The global box is looking at $151.4 million—a good number for an opening weekend. Warner Brothers is looking hot, as they also have the new Aquaman film coming out on December 22 and The Color Purple on Christmas Day. I am confident that Warner Brothers will keep that lead in the box office for the next couple of weeks.
Wonka is also the first Hollywood film to emerge since the SAG actress strike ended. Now that all that is over, big actors such as Timothée can promote and publicize the film. This would’ve been a crazy few months for Timothée Chalamet if Dune: Part Two came out this year when it was supposed to, but it is delayed until next year.
In other box office news, it looks like Beyoncé’s concert film, Renaissance, is slowly fading away from the box office. Renaissance: A Beyoncé Film, has dropped out of the top five at the box office thanks to films such as Wonka, The Boy And The Heron, and Godzilla Minus One.
